Treat Leech and Modified Leech as two different inventory choices. The adjective is the part that connects the lure to the documented boss pairing. A plain Leech may still have uses elsewhere, but this guide does not claim a target for it without direct evidence. It certainly should not be renamed in your head just because the icon or base word looks familiar.

Before changing anything else, inspect the selected lure. If the interface shortens labels in one view, open the fuller item or lure display and verify the name there. This small check is more reliable than repeating an encounter with the wrong assumption.

Where the Modified Leech fits in progression

The relevant route begins after the Lighthouse opening. Defeat the Spider Crab, collect the keys, buy the radar, and follow green northwest to the Forest. The Forest lake quest leads to the Giant Piranha. That is the encounter associated with Modified Leech in the current lure guide.

The lure is preparation, not the entire unlock. After the Giant Piranha is defeated, keep its skeleton and give it to the lady by the Forest lake. That delivery opens the yellow route west to the Desert. If the boss is already complete and you still have the skeleton, changing leeches will not advance the quest; the missing action is the hand-in.

A clean troubleshooting order

This order separates three different failures: wrong quest stage, wrong lure, and unfinished trophy delivery. Mixing them together leads to bad diagnoses, such as changing bait after the boss is already defeated or sailing west while the skeleton is still in your possession.

1. Confirm that you have reached the Forest and activated the lake quest that leads to the Giant Piranha.
2. Check the selected lure name. It should read Modified Leech for the documented pairing.
3. Use the active quest and in-game encounter feedback rather than a copied coordinate.
4. After the encounter, verify that you received the Giant Piranha skeleton.
5. Deliver the skeleton to the lady by the lake before searching for the Desert route.

What the community pairing does not prove

A lure table is useful evidence for matching an item to a target. It does not prove that every cast has a fixed outcome, that one position always works, or that the same timing survives every patch. It also does not prove that regular Leech is equivalent simply because no warning appears when you equip it.

For that reason, technique beyond the pairing should be described as community-tested and patch-sensitive. If another player reports a reliable method, use it as a trial rather than a rule. Patch notes can fix connection, save, and gameplay problems without documenting every subtle encounter change, so the in-game result remains the final check.

When not to keep swapping leeches

• You are still on the Lighthouse: finish the Spider Crab, keys, and radar sequence first.
• You have not started the Forest lake quest: follow the local progression instead of testing lures at random.
• The Giant Piranha is already defeated: look for its skeleton and the lake lady hand-in.
• The yellow Desert contact is active: the Leech stage is done, so follow the progression route west.
• A later patch changes the pairing: mark the old tactic as stale and recheck the community lure source rather than forcing it to fit.
